Women aren’t the only ones who feel self-conscious about excess fat. Today’s social media culture and competitive job market are powerful motivators for men to look slim and buff.
You consider yourself healthy, but in the past few years you’ve noticed a difference in your body. You find yourself looking at paunches in places that used to be flat, even if you’re working out in the gym. Why is that?
After you turn 30, you start losing 3-5% of your muscle mass with each new decade. It’s part of the normal aging process. Your muscles shrink, and that causes more of your food intake to turn to fat.
You’re doing everything you can by eating healthily and working out, but you still see a belly, or perhaps you’re developing a double chin, which can make you look decades older than you are.
Sherri Casey, MD at Northshore Skincare provides Coolsculpting® fat reduction treatments to both men and women who want slimmer body contours. Today’s technology can whisk away the excess fat in those trouble spots you haven’t been able to conquer with diet and exercise.
What is Coolsculpting?
Coolsculpting is a scientifically-proven method of reducing fat in trouble spots on your body — places where that excess fat just won’t come off. The technology freezes fat cells in those trouble spots, and research shows you’ll experience up to a 25% reduction in fat in the treated areas.
Scientists found that fat cells disintegrate more quickly than other cells when exposed to extremely cold temperatures. Coolsculpting’s founders discovered the exact temperature that works to freeze excess fat cells while not harming your body’s other cells.
What areas of the body does Coolsculpting treat?
Coolsculpting is FDA-approved for use on nine body areas that are the most common trouble spots:
- Abdomen (belly fat)
- Flanks (love handles)
- Fat around the bra line
- Upper arms
- Banana roll (fat under buttocks)
- Under the chin
- Below the jawline
What happens during a Coolsculpting appointment?
Dr. Casey and her RN, Kate Barnes, treat many Coolsculpting patients. You can read, listen to your favorite playlist, or simply think about your new body contours during the appointment.
You’ll lie on a clean table while Dr. Casey marks the target areas with a special pencil. Soft gel pads cover your skin around the area to be treated. Then Dr. Casey uses a patented handheld device with vacuum technology to suck the fat out of the area between the gel pads. You feel a cold sensation at first, along with some tingling, tugging, and possible stinging, but shortly afterwards your skin becomes numb.
How long does the treatment take?
The amount of time a treatment takes depends on what area of the body you’re having done. A small area like the chin takes less time than a larger area like the abdomen. The procedure ranges anywhere from 35 minutes to 3 hours depending on the area treated, with no down time.
When will I see results?
Coolsculpting destroys fat cells, but it takes time for the remains of those cells to be removed from your body. Your lymph system carries them out naturally over the next 1-3 months, so you‘ll be able to see your final results within that time span.
